Are you trying to play a DVD with a different regional code? DVD players in PC's will only play DVD's of the region code they are set to. You can change the region code, but only a certain number of times before it locks the DVD player. If your PC was purchased in Europe then you will only be able to play Region2 DVDs.

This may not be the problem, but I hope it helps

Windows Media Player will not play DVDs unless
a) You have installed a version Windows Media OS, or
b) You have installed another DVD media player, such a Intervideo, Cyberlink, etc. (This is due to Royalties, etc.)

As soon as you install a valid DVD player, then WMP will work just fine.
