I had braces for only eight months. I had to close a massive gap between my two front teeth! The only really painful thing (when the orthodontist is putting the braces on) is that they hold your mouth open with some kind of device (completely painless). Then they put a thing over your tongue to keep your tongue from getting in the way. The only part that hurts at all is when they tighten them. It's really quick and you feel pressure.

Since they were trying to close a gap, they had rubber bands on my braces. They took actual rubber bands and twisted them across my brackets. Those make your teeth sore. With my rubber bands, I didn't get them tightened again. Every time I went to the ortho., they put a thicker rubber band on.

Be sure to brush up and down, so your gums do not become inflamed and saggy. Your ortho. may say not to brush over brackets, but it really causes no damage at all. I think they are mainly concerned about the wire becoming loose.

Good luck!

Remember that was my personal teeth problems and a different orthodontist. Yours might be different.

It's good that your asking, because not knowing is part of what causes the pain. I'm going to send you the same info that I just sent to someone who just got theirs today and hopefully it will help you too. Also check out the site for picking your colors for the elastics. It's the fun part of wearing braces! Hope I'm able to help you some and Congrats on the braces!

We always advise ortho patients to take Advil or Motrin for the pain base the dose on your age and weight. It sounds like you just got yours. Try to eat soft cold things like ice cream, smoothies, yogurt, Popsicles, and more ice cream. The colder things tend to numb and help ease the pain, the medication helps reduce the inflammation that the braces are causing. This is all new stuff in your mouth and it takes a little time for your mouth to adjust. Try to keep some vaseline on your lips as well, they tend to dry and crack easily with ortho. Don't do any chewing for a few days, then slowly add those foods back into your diet. Take care and cut your food into bite size pieces or smaller. A few days of smoothies and ice cream won't hurt you, and it really does help. Try not to push your lips against your teeth, this will cause lip ulcers that are really painful. Use the wax if you feel any wires sticking your cheek or lip tissue. After your mouth gets used to all the hardware you won't need the wax and your tissue will get adjusted it just takes time. I tell all the ortho patients that Advil or Motrin will become a necessity during their time with braces, so stock up and just take it easy these first few days, it does get better. When you have your adjustments every month just be prepared with the Motrin or Advil and have the Popsicles handy. Keep in mind, this will all be over soon and you'll have a fantastic smile to show from it! I hope I was of some help to you, and good luck!

PS just saw this site that someone found, you might want to check out for your colors for your next visit. http://www.pbhs.com/ortho/braces/braces....

Don't worry you will be just fine. Most likely it might be a little sore that evening. Take some advil or tylenol, whichever you parents give you for pain medication. It's also a good ideal to have a little ora-gel on hand for numbing, just in case. Plan on having a soft diet for the first few days. Those are the worse. I would recommend that you even take something before you start feeling any discomfort. You should be used to everything by the end of the week. Good luck

Heck yes! I just got my braces today. They don't hurt when you first get them on but about 3-5 hours later they could be a pain in the @SS.

not to scare you or anything but my braces hurt very badly, it won't hurt at first but trust me a few hours later it will get painful. The pain will stop after a few days, but it will come back once a month for each tightening. Even my friend agreed with me when she got hers. Depending on how messed your teeth are it can be definitely worth it.

Yes, sorry to say that it can hurt. I remember when I had them when I was younger, and the worst times were after you had them tightened. Chewing could be painful at these times, so work out some soft foods you can have beforehand. It'll help to have some kind of pain relief handy.

It's worth it though - I get lots of comments on my great smile now!

Best of luck :)

Mine hurt when I first got them and when I got them tightened, but I learned that taking an ibuprofen before my appointment and for the next day or two took the edge off. Also listen to what other people said about soft food, they know what they are talking about. Good luck.

I have braces, and they hurt the first week or so, then the pain goes away. Oh, and when you get them tightened you just feel some pressure on your teeth.

They will hurt a little when you first get them, and whenever you have them tightened, but it's not really all that bad. Just take some painkillers if you need them, and eat soft foods at those times.
