You may take a deduction for state income taxes or state sales taxes but not both. If your state has an income tax you should figure out which one works out best for you. If your state doesn't have an income tax then you obviously would take the sales tax deduction.

You can either take the amount in the sales tax table or the actual sales taxes you paid, if you can prove that you paid more than the sales tax table amount.
