I agree with the advice that he is way too young. He should still be in a 5-point harness. Ideally even still rear facing (in Sweden they remain rear facing until 3 I think) There is no way his neck muscles are developed enough at "almost 2" to withstand a impact with a normal seat-belt. My son's 5-point harness goes to 65 pounds. I know some Britax (I think it's the Regent? was the Husky?) goes to 80 pounds. For his safety, comfort, and your sanity I'd purchase a new seat. It's worth every penny. Good luck.

He's too young for a booster seat. Most state laws require children to be 4 and 40 pounds to use a booster seat. He should still be in a five point harness, and there are carseats that will hold up to 80 lbs. like a previous answerer had already said.

An almost 2 year old is not mature enough for a booster, even if he is over 40 lbs. My 2.5 yr old is not quite 40lbs and we only use a booster for him in extreme situatoions like when we rented a car his regular seat would not securly buckle in to. I suggest you get a seat with an internal 5 point harness, the Cosco Apex seat goes up to 65 lbs and it does not cost as much as a Britax. You do have a few options, but if the Apex works with your car its the most cost effective. I will provide some excellent links.

I agree with what everyone has said. Your son still needs a harnessed seat. There ar several that can be used to 55, 65 or even 80 pounds. You should never put the seatbelt under the arm or behind your sons back. This is very dangerous and can cause internal decapitation or being flung from his seat in a wreck.

Get a booster seat that still uses the 5 point harness. Some of them accomodate kids up to 80 lbs.

Honestly, disipline him. Tell him he has to ride in this carseat. Reward him. if he doesnt fuss, whine, or cry on the way somewhere, and on the way home, give him something. Like a new toy. But, if he does even a little, dont. Or, tell him to stop, that if he keeps on he'll get a time out when he gets home. He's old enough to comprehend STOP and timeout.
