I have an lcd hdtv and I'm only getting 480p using component video with my dvd and I should be getting 720p. I can't use HDMI because my dvd player doesnt have it.

You are a little bit confused, but you are not alone.
The maximum resolution of any DVD is indeed 480p, so your TV correctly says that its INPUT is 480p.
However, the TV has an internal scaler and will automatically scale that input to 720p. So, you are WATCHING 720p.
You don't need any upconverting DVDs or DVD players with HDMI. The TV can do all that. Enjoy your TV.
