When you don't want to be outside yourself.

Dogs should never primarily live outside; they should always be much loved, indoor pets.

However, I had a friend in Alaska who would keep her Retriever/Collie mix outside for at least half a day all winter, and that dog survived just fine (and that poor dog didn't even have a dog house).

As long as you provide a warm, cozy dog house that's not open to the wind, some kind of bedding (straw is a good one), she should be OK. Make sure she has lots of time inside, and the outside time is just for short periods. Dogs that are left outside all the time can develop behavioral issues such as aggression, or just get plain lonely.

Hope this helps...

Dogs are built to live outdoors, however they are obviously domesticated. I have an aussie and she has alot of hair, so probably yours is pretty loaded as well. I also have 8 labradors and they were once left out for a while by a woman taking care of them and a few of them get frost bite on their teets. If the weather is below freezing it really is not wise to leave any animal outdoors for over 15-20 minutes without some sort of blanket or protection. If you leave your dog out for longer then this I doubt it will die, as long as it is not brutally cold or way too long. But your dog has to go outside to go to the bathroom so just let him or her stay out for 5-10 minutes when it is below freezing then you wont have to worry about it.

You mean stay outside for an extended period? like a few hours/ or overnight?

I would say when you need a heavy coat to stay outside, it is too cold for the dog.

Well, I personally would never do that, but that's just me. Australian Shepherd's are pretty rugged. ALWAYS make sure he has adequate shelter that is facing away from the wind. Line his house with hay or stray and give him a warm blanket to lay on. Also, make sure he always has fresh water...they make a heated water dish so the water does not freeze.

For me, too cold would be 10 degrees above zero for that breed.

Under 40 degrees id say is a little crul. Never leave your dog out for long periods of time because just like humans, if exposed to cold tempatures to long may get sick or even hypothermia

Depends on the kind of dog, size, age, condition etc. I would say if it feels too cold for you outside, it is too cold for your dog as well.Good luck with the care of your dog.

well l think dogs r part of ur family so treat them like ur kids almost, l myself let my dogs out only to go potty and then back in but in the summer l work in the yard alot so they have there own pool to relax in and l will change it a couple times a day not to mention it is great to give them a bath outside verses in the house lol. but for the winter l would not leave them out at all. l think pets should be in the house if they r kept clean and good training skills of course but they will be just like kids right
