1. The gene (a segment of DNA on a chromosome) is transcribed into a strand of mRNA.
2. The mRNA leaves the nucleus through a pore in the nuclear envelope and goes to a ribosome.
3. tRNA molecules have the matching anticodons for the mRNA codons. The tRNAs each bring an amino acid to add to the growing protein. This is called translation.
4. When the amino acid chain is complete, it releases and folds up into a characteristic shape for that protein.
