I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE OTHER GIRL ABOUT THE GARNIER PRODUCTS!!!! THEY ARE EXCELLENT....BUT YOU HAVE TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR FROM THE HEAT WHEN YOU ARE USING HEAT TO STYLE YOUR HAIR.....FLAT IRONS ARE GREAT BECAUSE YOU CAN SAVE YOUR HAIR FROM A CHEMICAL PROCESS....THE BEST THERMAL ACTIVATED PRODUCT IS BY BIOLAGE...IT DOESN'T COST ALL THAT MUCH MORE AND IT'S WORTH THE EXTRA CHANGE...HOPE THAT HELPS

Is it one length right now? Or do you have layers? Cutting it yourself is NOT recommended as you can't see the back so it will take you that much longer to get the sides to catch up with the back.
The fastest way(even though it doesn't sound like it would be fast but it really is the best way to grow out layers if you have them) would be to have your hair cut to the shortest length ...say, if your longest layer is just below your chin, then get it cut to that point and keep getting it cut to that point until you are at one length. Then you can just keep getting an eigth of an inch taken off every 6-8 weeks. This works exteremly well when you're trying to grow out your bangs. You won't be paying "catch up" with the rest of your hair. If you're looking to still have layers, but want to grow it long, then just cut the bottom even all the way around.
As for styling? Good thing you're not using your flat iron anymore!
After shampooing and conditioning (use GOOD, PROFESSIONAL products) use a mousse, the size of an egg, this will hold your curls. Let your hair air dry naturally. See what your curl is like and if need be, then grab your curling iron and spiral curl small sections around your face and around the top layer. Anywhere your curl is slacking a bit. If you can get your hands on AG's VARNISH to add shine (i find that it also controls a bit too) then use a drop or two. Anything that is professional that will add shine would be great!
Best shampoo and conditioner I've found is Matrix's CURL LIFE. It makes your hair smooth and gives your hair that extra bounce without the POOF!
Hope this helps some!
Good Luck!

I have thick and curly hair as well. It is currently past my waist in length.

I recommend using a nice leave in conditioner and serum along with your shampoo and conditioner. DO NOT BRUSH your hair. Use large, wide-toothed combs instead. De-tangle carefully.

Letting your hair grow takes patience. There have been MANY times I have been ready to shave it ALL off, but I believe it is worth the pain.

Good growing!!

use products that protect your hair and make it stronger. Like Length and strength system by Garnier Frutice.

And when you flat iron your hair buy a serum specially formulated to protect against heat
