Talk to him quietly, pet him gently, reassure him you are there and he is safe. Sometimes I hold mine until he settles down, just be careful you don't get scratched. That's about it. Be nice and gentle in your tone of voice and touch.

Have you ever had to calm a kid down when they woke up from a nightmare? Talk to it softly and pet it until it calms down

If your cat wakes up from a night mare, give it fresh food and water and pet it or scrath it right behind the ears and on the lower part of its neck. this will make them purr. It will also feel good on you hand.

Don't crowd him, and have something he likes (catnip, a cat treat, or w/ev) and have it ready by him, and maybe he will get so distracted he forgets about his dream.
