would you actually start thinking for yourself? What affect would that have on your religious beliefs?

Martin Luther:
"Reason must be deluded, blinded, and destroyed. Faith must trample underfoot all reason, sense, and understanding, and whatever it sees must be put out of sight and ... know nothing but the word of God."

"But since the devil's bride, Reason, that pretty whore, comes in and thinks she's wise, and what she says, what she thinks, is from the Holy Spirit, who can help us, then? Not judges, not doctors, no king or emperor, because [reason] is the Devil's greatest whore."

Christians unconsciously hate themselves. If they did think for themselves, they wouldn't take the credit. They would give God all the credit not knowing he's imaginary

I thought for myself, that is why I don't believe in Evolution, that is why I believe in God, that is why I am a Christian.
You may say you think for yourself, but do you really? Did you know the Bible is the one of the most historically accurate collection of books to come to us from antiquity? When you read of an event in the Bible you can be certain of one thing: It really happened.
If you really do think for yourself, then think about this: The guarded tomb Jesus' body was placed in was found to be empty three days later. Using what I suspect your beliefs are (no God, no life after dying) this could never have happened. Does this mean your beliefs are wrong? I will leave you to ponder this (ponder means to carefully think about).

I'm all for the hypothetical - at least hypothetically - but this one I just can't get into. God would *never* declare thinking for oneself is a sin because free will was one of His greatest gifts to us - one of many.

ETA - Sweetie, quoting Martin Luther here doen't help you. He didn't speak for all Christians. Surely you know that.

I would like to answer this, but I need to ask my pastor first. Sorry, maybe I will check back.

[edit] Luther wasn't a fideist, so you know. He was simply hyperbolic in speech. He also said to "fart in the devil's face" and other things that would get censored if typed here.

Hello Brendan,

Well! our faith tells us that if anyone lacks wisdom let them come before the throne of God and ask for it. So! if there is anyone out there incapable of thinking for them self all they have to do is ask God. He is just and faithful to see them Thur what every it is they need. Good Luck

Christians are suppose to think for themselves.
Nothing wrong in that.
That's why the Christian system is based on principles, not laws.
Thinking for oneself does not mean doing whatever.
It means taking general guidelines and applying them.

Christianity IS based on sound reason and thought. Why would you think otherwise? Do you know any Christians? What are they like?

Who says that we don't think for ourselves? Just because you and I don't agree on something doesn't necessarily mean that one of us is incapable of independent thought.

In fact, intolerance like this makes me wonder if *you* are capable of thinking for yourself. It sure sounds like you're parroting whatever anti-Christian propaganda that you last read. I mean, it certainly doesn't take a lot of brains to mindlessly lump everyone into one category.

Actually, it's because I started thinking for myself that I became a Christian.

When your born, your parents start to think for you. When you're old enough your school and teacher start to think for you. Then the city, state, and country starts to think for you and tell you what you are allowed to do.

And you're complaining about what?
