I have hip bursitis so bad that I am on oxycontin 20mg 2 times day. I also have severe lower back arthritis. I posted a short time ago about the meds I was, and am, on now. The orthopedic surgeon I was seeing had only done this surgery (removing the bursa on a hip) 1 time. He would not do it as he believed my arthritis was causing the hip problem and sent me to a neurosurgeon who said my back arthritis had nothing to do with my hips. He wants me to go to a different ortho doc. Has ANYONE had this surgery and does it take the pain away? I can only sleep about 2 hours each night before the pain in my hips and back are just unbearable. Hense the medications. I have allready went the physical therapy route which only helps very little. Thanks so much.

Ok, before I EVER would submit to the scalpel I would try acupuncture, a osteopath and/or a chiropractor. A good acupuncturist is worth their weight doubled in gold.

Your surgeon doesn't sound really hopeful...try alternative therapy and if that doesn't work THEN go for it you've tried it all....

Hi there, I would suggest you go to your doctor to make sure either way. I had bursitis in my hip about 7 years ago (I was only 17!!!) from sitting on a till at Sainsbury's and twisting all day long. My hip ended up being really swollen and painful. Its was almost as if I'd put on weight but only on one hip. Most odd. Ideally you need to get it correctly diagnosed. Rest it as much as is practicable and try an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen. This will bring down the swelling and can be taken in conjunction with paracetamol if the pain is really bad. I made a special oil to massage in so you could try that too. I can't remember the exact ingredients but try looking in a book called Fragrant Pharmacy. In the meantime mix some Chamomile essence with a base oil and massage directly onto the area. HTH and good luck! Fozbah ;-)

I don't understand why your doctors have not giving you a shot of cortisone in the hip. That would help take down the bursitis rapidly. Ask your doctors about this. You probably need to be on anti inflammatory drugs until the inflammation goes down. Ask your doctor about this.

Instead of another orthopedic doctor try a Rheumatologist as they are better for treating your type of pain.

I agree with one of the other posters that you should see a chiropractor or a acupuncturist. They might be able to give you more pain relief than the medical doctors.

I would also suggest you sleep on a waterbed or an air cushion (This uses an air pump to keep air circulating and relieve pressure. This is available through medical supplies stores.) to relieve the pressure on your hips.

Hi
I have had both hips operated on about ten years ago and i am still in pain. I have arthritis all through my body including my spine and have injections in my spine to help the pain. I can tell you nothing can stop the pain but, it eases a bit with tables and injections.
Good luck
Phil
