Really the US involvment in the current conflict in Iraq can be traced back to the early 1990's. I will give a brief overview.

1988: Saddam and the Ayatollah of Iran sign a cease-fire ending thier bloody eight-year war. There is no winner.

1990: Iraq, crippled under hundreds of billions of dollars in war debt, invades Kuwaitt to take control of its oil resource. Iraq now controls nearly 50% of the world's crude oil

1991: After Iraq refuses to leave Kuwaitt, US and coalition forces under a UN mandate remove Iraqi forces from Kuwaitt in Operation Desert Strom

1991: Saddam is forced to sign a cease-fire with the West where he will give up all of his WMD and his capability to produce more WMD, he must verify this through inspections

1998: Saddam kicks inspectors out of Iraq, Clinton bombs Iraq, inspectors do not return

2002: Inspectors return to Iraq at the request of the US and British governments to verify Iraq's compliance with the 1991 cease-fire

2003: US and British force invade Iraq and remove Saddam from power because Saddam refused to verify that he did not have WMD, US and Britian occupy Iraq and are trying to set up a democratic government
