Because children of radical atheists tend to do the opposite of their parents, just as children of radical christians tend to become atheists or something other than christian when they become teens. Kids will often reject a parent's views if the parent is too vehement and forceful in trying to make the kid accept them. Kids rebel.

From the documentaries I've seen, ol Madeline was nuttier than Jim Jones, just without the religious delusion. That may have had something to do with it. (maybe not).
