In the early days people didn't smile because the lens of the camera was open for a long time. So how did it come about that with new technology people are encouraged to smile and say cheese when having a photo taken?

The older pictures where folks are not smiling had to do with beliefs and religion. Do you know that a lot of Christians once thought that picture taking was a sin. Then when people started having their picture's taken they were to be serious about it as it was not for pleasure sake. Look at some Mennonites, as they still don't believe in having their picture taken.

We smile now because those old laws of land have long since been put to rest. We have conditioned our children to smile into the camera so that their life appears happy. Remember, that commercials and advertisement's are and have been a big influence as to why we do this today. The Kodak commercials of yesteryear portrayed wealth and a good life with a smile. Try watching old commercials on youtube.com or something of equal value.

When that photo is taken, its always good to have a nice impression of what you look like.

I don't like photos at all , but I've seen myself when I don't smile and when I have a smile , It just looks so much better in a photo to smile .. 8 )

People didn't normally smile in photos back then due to the time it took to expose the image. It's easier to hold a serious expression for five minutes than it is to smile, and as technology developed and exposures got quicker, folks started smiling more. Smiling in photos also looks more natural and happier.

Because people are always prettier when they smile.

On the scale of 1 to 10 girls who smile a lot always get at least a +2 added to their original score in my book.

I am not aware of any "real reason" other than it looks good to have people look happy. However, personally, I have found that sometimes the more "natural" look is sometimes better. My father liked photograghy, and was very good at it. My favorite pic I took many years ago of my parents, is one where I took a picture of him, taking a picture of her, and both were in my pic. Plus, if you go to a pro photography studio, you will probably find some pics without people smiling-and they are very well done. Enjoy photograghy!

Well mostly because of conditioning .. you grow up in this society and you are taught that this is norm behavior when encountered with the specific cirumstance of having your picure taken. But also because if there is going to be permanent image of you, you probably want to make it look the best as possible, and people often look better when they smile

Not everyone smiles. But nobody hates smiles either. What are we supposed to do in a picture? Stick out our middle fingers? This is an odd question

To capture a happy moment. Can you say cheese without laughting?

In modern times, photography has moved away from solely documenting life, and has evolved into an art form.
