I think it is sad that you would ask a question you already know the answer to. Someone gave you a gift and you trashed it in front of them you saw the look on their face are you just hoping to feel better by being abused by strangers? get a card to appologize and maybe some flowers for your inconsideration. By the way you never know when something like that may come in handy, just think you are working but can not carry a pocketbook often you can carry a fannypack and it can be moved around to keep out of the way. by the way doing something to hurt others on purpose will comeback to you many times over. I keep a box in my closet with gifts that I just don't want, and sometimes I'll hit a big sale on something that I can use later for gifts. Just thank the giver politely, then if you think they gave you something horrible on purpose take one of last years fruitcakes out of the box when their birthday comes around.

Well think about it, what would you be writing here if you'd given someone a gift you thought they'd like and they trashed it right in front of you?

Yes. You should have nicely told the giver "thank you".....then passed it along to some frumpy middle-aged, coupon-clipping person (like me!) who would appreciate it ;-)!

I probably would have waited, buts its your prerogative. I mean if this person knows you, that's obviously not something you would want. In addition, the individual should not be surprised at your reaction

If you're in the states, there's a web site where you can register for FREE, and folks give things away they don't want. You should have done something like that.

Yes, it was very rude. Treating someone with such a lack of respect isn't very nice.
