don't let her start something else until she cleans up what she was playing with. don't give in and be consistant. also reward her when she does clean up after herself. a sticker chart works great and is inexpensive.

Our daughter is almost 4. We make it fun and silly. Here are a few ideas...
One of those stuffed animal corner nets is great (its like playing basket ball with dolls and Pooh)
She has drawers in her desk that we use for toys and those are the toy "beds". After she puts her toys to "sleep", she always tells us to "ssshhhh, they're sleeping"
Sometimes we play speedy pick up. That's when we do it VERY fast, (picture cleaning on fast forward....exaggerate your movements) and silly. She cracks up. It probably takes just as long, but it's pretty funny.
And unfortunatly, there have been times that I've asked and asked her to help and she hasn't so she gets an option. She puts them away...now or Mommy does it, but you may not see those toys for a while. She tested the waters on that a couple times, but now she usually moves very quickly when that threat comes into play.

For one you can tell her that if she doesn't pick up her toys she won't be able to play with them for a certain amount of time.
You can also try making clean up a game. The "Clean Up" song from Barney I believe makes it a little more interesting. You could make it a little race, who can pick up the most toys.
Or you could try no dessert the day she doesn't clean up, or take away tv time or something similar.

my son can not start another activity until one is done. No blocks until we pick up the trains. He's 2 years old and caught on quick. Make a racing game out of it or sing the clean up song. These are the other things we do. Once you start you have to stick to it though. She will catch the first time you give in..kids are smart like that.

i took my trash out replaced the trash can with a clean bag then i picked up the toys took my son by the hand lead him to the kitchen and made him watch me throw his toys in the trash can and close the lid ! he went and picked up the rest himself and put them away. later i just took the toys out of the trash and hid them for a week or two and tossed them back into his toy box. tough love is the best love.

Take her to the toy store and ask her to pick a toy out. buy it and then take it home. Tell her when she cleans up the ones she already has then she can handle the responsibility of another toy.

what we do with my niece is simply tell her that whatever she doesn't want to help pick up, we are going to get rid of and she won't be able to play with it anymore. I went as far as packing up some toys one day for her to realise that we were being serious. She is only 2 and if you ask her now, she will pick up her room by herself.

At this age, you need to make a game of it. My daughter-in-law did this and the girls really enjoyed it. They sang a song and in no time at all - the room was clean.
