When I was younger, my grandmother always used to buy us the conversation hearts for Valentines Day. The only thing is, she never used to buy the Necco ones or the Brach's (those are the soft ones). She used to buy the ones that were really hard with the sharp (I don't know if that's the right word) sides, not the rounded ones and the raised red writing. I liked them much better than the Necco and the Brach's ones. Instead of turning into mush when you put them in your mouth, you would have to actually bite down on them.

They are made by Necco.

Necco and brach's have been making then for years and I think the one that you are talking about are necco, I remember then being that way years ago but they have changed through the years. Another company that makes them now is Jelly Belly. I like those best because the fruit flavors are really strong. There are some off brands that Walmart, CVS and Walgreens may have and may be worth a look. Good Luck.

They were (I haven't been able to find them in years) made by Farley's or Farley's and Slathers and I agree they were SO much better than the Necco or Brach ones. I do a search occasionally to see if they have brought them back out, but so far, no luck.
