I had had a tattoo for about 6 years, and every now and then it goes all puffy so that you can feel the outline and it gets really itchy what could be causing this? Thanks

I have the same problem as you after I got my first tattoo about 5 years ago. It was constantly raised, and itched to the point where I was practically scratching ther colour out of it.

Having mentioned it to a tattoo artist upon having my second tattoo created, he said it was most likely to be because the needle was inserted too deep into the skin and has 'scarred' the skin, hence why it is raised.

There's nothing you can do about this now. I do find that aloe vera gel over the area keeps it calm and cool, reducing the inflammation somewhat as well as that annoying itching. An antihistamine cream from the chemist is also very effective at relieving the itch. Remember to use sunblock on the tattoo also when out in the sun, as the area will be more delicate than the rest of you, and needs the moisture and sun protection to both make the colour last and to reduce your unwanted tattoo side-effects.

Probably done by a tattooist who was not really into there job and stuck the needle in to deep, and the ink in deeper than most tattoo's should be so it will keep flaring up. Don't know what to say.

It might be an allergic reaction to the ink or a recurring infection

I am not sure. are you picking at it? have you changed lotion, soap, shampoo? or new sheets? it is probably something you are allergic to!
