Well....
I think it's mainly because men are more interested in sex, and women are more interested in relationships. You can't build a relationship with an @sshole.

Visualize this . . . A person (man or woman) is found to be very attractive . . . A relationship is sought out and interest is there . . . They begin dating . . . As attractive as a person might be there are conversations to be shared, emotions to share, to be supportive when challenging moments in life come about, humor to share and to help your sweetie to a better mood with your humor, compassion, care,, value, honesty, tenderness . . . etc.
All the while an attractive face / body is in front of you.
What good does that attractiveness do if the person within that heart, mind, body can not emotionally relate with you?
If the relationship grows to marriage, the body, face (while still attractive) does change with time. Yet, that soul and heart (personality) within is what I am deeply relating to at that point in the relationship.
I am attracted to a certain look of face and body of a man . . . yet, if he does not have emotional intelligence behind those eyes that is looking at me . . . I let the relationship go.
While I do love the hugs, touchs, embraces...the heart of a man (his personality) is what really hugs me, not just his cute body.

I see this in real life with my friends as well. I think it is a defense mechanism. Guys actually care about personality just as much as girls, just not at first...
But at the beginning, GENERALLY- girls tend to look for whether it will work out, etc while guys look for how hot she is, how it'll make me look to be dating her, how it would be to f*ck her. Example, my best girlfriend said she thought this guy was someone she could see herself dating long term and she was really falling hard for him. While a guy friend of mine started dating this girl and made the comment, "I don't think it'll work out, she's kinda stupid but she's HOT." (they're still together 6 months later)... So, I guess at the beginning its different but in the end personality is what really matters... if a girl is hot but demanding and rude, b*tchy and controlling, it'd take a very weird guy to be happy in that relationship... vice versa.
For me personally, I do not find that personality matters more in the beginning to me then it does to guys. I need there to be physical attraction before I even consider a guy dating material. I'll get to know someone and become friends with him regardless, but for any more? Phsyical attraction MUST be there first, rather then the possibility for long term.

Dunno. But when I was younger, I had a friend who was prettier than me (I know, you never thought that possible!) But she was a cheating lying thieving hypocrite. But men swarmed around her! Whereas me, the lil wallflower was left alone! Seriously I think that theres some psychobabble reason - women are subconsciously looking for a mate, a life partner (being the nurturers), so they want the security and stability, whereas men want to procreate and keep the species alive so they go for physical attributes.
