I am an Indian, working as a medical transcriptionist and I work at night usually up to 4 a.m. and after the work i really struggle to get the sleep on bed even though i feel sleepy and i get sleep after 1 hour. But the days i do not work, i dont get sleep at all...some uneasiness feeling in the head, some ringing sounds and when i close my eyes, i feel some fear kind of thing and get up immediately even thot i will be feeling lot of sleepy and yawning. I do not consume any caffeine also before sleep...I am wondering whether i need sleeping tabs or is it an anxiety problem... ?? kindly gimme some suggestions to get my sleep back. Thank you.

I do transcription work too. It's tough work really. Hard on the body when you think the hours that you are tapping away.

You have to take care of yourself, exercise (have a nice long walk or a couple of short walks) and try a nice hot shower before bed, with a camomile tea and nice soothing music.

You keep odd hours so that could throw your body's rhythm off, but if you have a sleep disorder it's not good. You have to develop a bit of a routine for your body to follow.

I don't like the sound of the ringing in your ears and that feeling of fear rushing in when you close your eyes. Have you had a check up to see if you are ok? Your blood pressure and for diabetes etc? It could very well be an anxiety problem.

I think as you get older you don't sleep as well as when you were younger. You shouldn't rely on sleeping pills as they just don't work after a while and you don't want to become a junkie just to get to sleep. Try to do it naturally and balance your life out by eating well, exercising and having a quiet spell to settle down before you sleep. Make sure you are comfortable, it's quiet and dark. You may only need 5 or 6 hours of sleep most days, but allow yourself a nap if you need it during the day. Pay attention to your body and it's needs.

Good luck, and ignore stupid people like Mr. C...he picked a good avatar too it's reflective of the ugliness inside him.

You're not alone.

When I was working, I felt I was wasting my life when I tried to catch a few extra Z's on weekends, and would wake early with a sense of dread and despair, with a feeling inside my head much as you describe.

I felt (and still feel) the same when I tried to grab a cat nap to catch up on lost sleep. If I do fall asleep, I'll wake with the same terrible feeling.

I sympathize with you. If you feel anything like I did, and still do, I know what you are going through.

I don't want to discourage you, but so far, no psychotropic medication, psychiatric treatment, or religious counseling has come close to touching the problem.

However, we are all different. What didn't work for me, might work for you. Make sure, make damn sure, when you tell your doctor of your problem that he doesn't sluff you off. I have just about lost faith in the medical community, because this has plagued me for decades.

The problem is the night shift . . . it is not natural and very few peoples bodies adapt successfully. 9 out of 10 people I knew who worked nights ended up with serious physical and mental problems if they did it too long.

As soon as possible, get yourself to a day shift or swing (that is done before midnight) . Sleep deprivation is very bad for your health and caffeine & sleep pills only complicate the problem.
good luck

If you are not getting enough sleep, you will suffer a disorder called sleep deprivation. This can lead to problems of anxiety. You should seek medical attention if it persists for any length of time.

I have been in your place. Working those hours isn't for everyone. See if you can change your work hours.

Here is the best suggestion, tape record everything you say all night long and when you go to bed, play it back, because your boring as hell, you put me to sleep just reading your question.
