They're afraid that when they show up, they'll be mugged.
But honestly, the appearance of mystic beings and such hasn't gone on the decline, it's been on the rise. The number of people who can actually see such things, however, has been declining ever since the invention of a certain set of ideals known as Science decided it would be the new belief system to end all belief system. Some science, like physics, etc, is useful; however, some science gets way too big for its' britches....unfortunately, people buy into its' "proof" that religion doesn't exist, and therefore start to lose their sight. So, yeah, the Virgin Mary's been seen. But who wants to say they saw her, only to get locked up in a padded cell a few days later? o.o;

Our Lady of Nicaragua was an apparition that took place in the eighties. She appeared in damascus in the 90's. The Church hasn't approved any other private revelations.

I saw a video of one taken in Cairo I think it was. It was on an Unsolved Mysteries
show. A ghostly apparition of a woman in a robe and scarf, with her arms outstretched, on top of a building with people watching.
