You could focus on the genetics of the disease, or do a power point presentation that covers the pathophysiology of the disease, the etiology(cause), who is at greatest risk(i.e. african americans), show how the trait is passed on to the child by showing the autosomal recessive pattern. You should also cover the life threatening aspect of the disease which is sickle cell crisis, and then list treatments and prevention of sickle cell crisis. It is common practice also to provide genetic counseling to clients that may consider having children but are carriers of the trait. Medline Plus and Wikipedia give great explanations about the various aspects of the disease. But I would outline it like this:
I Pathophysiology(how the disease works)
II Etiology(how it is caused-this is where you would cover the genetics aspect)
III Signs and Symptoms
IV Treatment and prevention of sickle cell crisis(genetic counciling would be the first line of defense, however if each parent say has the trait but does not exhibit the disease they may be unaware of the risk)
V Mortality rates/prognosis r/t sickle cell crisis
VI summary
Try to find pictures of what the blood cells look like in sickle cell clients and then what a normal blood cell looks like. The malformation of the cells causes them to clump together. It is a very painful, distressing disease. This is another great site www.genome.gov which is the address for the National Human Genome Research Institute, and also go to http://www.ghr.nlm.nih.gov
click on genetic disorders and on that page click on sickle cell. It has alot of useful information. The absolute best site that you should go to first to see the punnett squares and basic disease information-THIS SITE IS AWESOME is http://www.ygyh.org/sickle/inherited.htm. Good luck and have fun with it.
