This is a classic double bind. It is a commandment that cannot possibly be met, and so Jesus sets up the listeners to feel inadequate no matter what they have done.

If a parent says, "You have to do my bidding voluntarily" it's a similar set up. You may do it, but there's always the idea that maybe you haven't been as voluntary as you could be. So even though you do the work, you've still failed because you didn't feel great about carrying out the deed.

And to those of you who say this is simply a goal to reach for, Jesus doesn't say "Strive to be perfect." He says, "BE perfect." The language was there for him to use if he meant "try." He didn't use that language. He gave a command, instead.

Because only perfect holiness, no sin whatsoever may enter heaven. But since we all sin, we are all doomed unless we take on the perfectness of Jesus Christ. When we accept him as our savior his righteousness is imparted to us. Then God views us just as he views Jesus Christ himself, perfect and holy. And it's the only way, but it is that easy, if you believe.

He was pointing out our inabilities to fulfill God's Law. He was pointing out our need for an intermediary. He forces us to realize we will never be "Good enough". Therefore, we must rely on Him. This is scary, yet relieving. We must admit we are not in control, and at the same time, put Him in control, so that we have control of our final destination.

Perfect in this sense means; a state of being complete or whole. It's not 'perfect' in the sense of a state of being finished, there's an important difference.

We are being conformed to the image of Jesus. I strive for that every day. I will and do fall short but I am headed in the right direction. Perfection is the standard.

BORN AGAIN TO BE AS ANGELS

John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of
water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is
born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel
not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it
listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh,
and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

1Pet.1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of
conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. 23 Being born
again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which
liveth and abideth for ever. 24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of
man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth
away: 25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which
by the gospel is preached unto you.

AS ANGELS
Luke 20:34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry,
and are given in marriage: 35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain
that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in
marriage: 36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels;
and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

It's more of a goal to try to attain. God gave us all free will, therefore we all sin. There is redemption. We should all be Christ-like, loving fellow mankind and doing unto others....not judging others...you get the drift.

Perfection is God's standard. Only through Christ does God see his children as if we had never sinned.
