If an athlete wins a sport's game, you can often hear them publicly thanking Jesus for the win (even thought the other team prayed equally as hard).

Do you think this is inappropriate?

Some would say that a God would be too busy governing the Universe to care if one team happened to score more points than another team.

If you do think God cares who wins, where does it stop?

Does he help tennis players win matches too?

What about people who play checkers or chess?

Let's say that I'm playing chess with someone right now and I win.

Should I thank Jesus for winning?

I think alot of Christians would say that's going to far and God does not really care about sports. He has other, much more important things to focus on.

Do you agree?

I think it is wrong to pray that you win. But you could pray that you and your teammates will do the very best you know how. If you win, thank God everyone did their best.

The case of Eric Liddell is an example, he was a very devote Christian before the event, he honored God by refusing to alter what today would be seen as a ludicrous belief: Not to run on Sunday. So the Olympic Officials allowed him to run in the finals of the "wrong event" and he broke a world record that stood for many years.
The man with the quote from the Bible that ran up to Liddell said it all "I will honor him who honors me".
To Liddell, whether he ran or not was less important than the honor he had for God.

If you had to take drugs, commit professional fouls, used dirty tactics, and bad mouthed the opposition during the game, then the praise isn't genuine, it's just an act!
If a player wants to praise God, then he should also praise the opposition for being such a competitive team.

I have never understood this and I think it is very inappropriate. You see people thanking God or Jesus for winning ball games, for tennis trophies, Grammy awards, and so forth. God has nothing to do with that. He is no doubt pleased that we are enjoying ourselves but he does not take sides in competitive activities.

I think sometimes people are thanking him for the talent or skill they have but . . . still, thank him at home. Because what it looks like is that you are thanking God for helping you "beat" the other side.

If one person survives in an airplane crash that kills 200 others, and the person said God saved him, doesn't that mean that God condemned the 200 to die?

It's all about crazy thinking. If something Good happens, God gets the credit. If something Bad happens, God doesn't get the blame. That's given over to free-will.

Crazy logic leads to crazy conclusions.

God cares, but doesn't intervene.

God is an Evertonian. And our form over the past few years has shown He doesn't get involved.

I think He bets on the games.

And He hates to lose.
