I've just put up a studding partition (non load-bearing) in my garage and I used 3x2 studs with 9.5mm plasterboard. This seems to be more than adequate. The studs I used are sawn timber (ie not planed) and really are 3 inches by 2 inches.

A standard wall is made out of 2x4 studs. Keep the metric dimensions out of the question construction in America does not use the metric system at all. Also a 2x4 is a nominal size for the studs. The actual size is 1 1/2"x3 1/2". Don,t go looking for 2x3's as they are very odd size and are most commonly found in mobile homes.

A standard 2X4 stud is actually 3 1/2 X 1 1/2. I would measure your wood before you begin. Standard interior walls are built with 2X4s.

4x2 is the most common, but you can buy metal stud which is alot quicker to put up, you just cut it with tin snips and screw it together with self tapers.
