Both were molested, but there were apparently more male victims than female. The prevalence of poor sexual differentiation among the celibate priesthood has been cited. These priests have been said to have emotional development similar to their victims.
The media has focused in on the male victims because of the "altar boy" role that some of the victims played in the liturgy. It was also well known that gay men were allowed to become priests, and the popular misconception that still arises links homosexuality with pedophilia. In truth, the two have nothing to do with one another.
Anyway, many young girls also were victimized by priests.

There is still a stigma against gay people in general, and those attracted to boys even more so. Those who feel that attraction may feel shame and guilt, and be drawn to the church's atmosphere of forgiveness. Molesters become priests, not the other way around.

The matter is not "catholic". First, celibacy is imposed by various religions. Not marring is against human nature, and difficult to wrestle. Second, the unprotected children are victims, at times, of the environment in which they have to exist.

Because they don't feel afraid. Even priest do molestation repeatedly they will not be excommunicated, nor removed from priesthood, and ready to use money to save their priest from court hearings, and transfer the priest to other location assignments (and mostly a new cycle of molestation/rape controversy is again to happen).

Because the few priests who committed such crimes were obviously homosexuals, just like the many men in other professions who have done the same thing, though with less press coverage than priests get.

They molested also girls. It is wrong. So very wrong. These people were not true servants of God. They are sick people and they need to go to jail or to the institution where they are locked up.
