I'll also try to help enforce the idea that BOTH EYES SHOULD BE OPEN WHEN SHOOTING. You have a dominant eye that the gun sights will be aligned with but your other eye needs to be open for peripheral vision and for being able to better see depth. It's also safer to be able to see more when handling a gun and when around others who are handling guns.

That is not really a problem with a handgun. Find a knowledgable firearms instructor to get started. You can never get enough instruction in the use of firearms. There is alway something more to learn. Also learningun safety is different from learning to be a good shot and learning to be a good shot is different from learning how to use a gun defensivly. And handgun hunting is something else entirely. Spend your time with a good instructor and then find a good mentor.
Good luck.

There are many reasons to keep both eyes open. A trick that some people do to get used to basically ignoring their weak eye is to put scotch tape over the weak eye piece on their safety glasses

Find a local indoor or outdoor shooting range and talk to the instructor there. Also check to see if there are any local hunter safety classes or personal handgun safety classes.

I recommend the basic handgun course at your local N.R.A.
Not only will they teach you to handle your weapon safely, they will teach you to shoot it properly.Which is with both eyes OPEN .

Use your dominant eye for aiming. It will seem more natural than you may now think. you can practice aiming any time by just pointing the pistol at things in the room with you.

Both eyes are optimal. It's nice to see other posters mentioning this. Some people on answers tried to tell me otherwise. I know better.

Keeping both eyes open IS the proper way to shoot a pistol. It provides depth perception and faster target acquisition and follow-up shots. It also keeps you more aware of your surroundings. (non-targets moving into your field of fire, etc.)
