I want to deep fry some hushpuppies. The oil is supposed to be about 350-375 degrees. I don't have a thermometer so how do I know what to set the stove at? The stoves heat settings are 1-10... so maybe 7 or so??

the safest way to do this on a stove would not to put a large amount of oil into a sauce pot or stockpot but to put a mall amount of oil in a deep frying pan.
on an electric stove 7 or 8 would be way to high
fill the pan a quarter with oil...your hush puppies may not be uniformly round with this method but at least its not as dangerous.
start with heat level 4...wait a few min for the oil to heat and then drop a small amount of your hush puppie into the oil..if it starts frying right away that heat level is good...if not turn it up one and do the same thing do this until you have found the correct heat.
spoon your mix into the oil...the oil should be high enough to cover 1/2 the mix...
keep an eye on your puppies and when one side is done turn them with a pair of tongs.
this would be the safest way for someone cooking at home without the proper equipment.
if your oil begins to smoke remove it from the stove right away.

I would like to take the time out to thank whoever made the fry daddy for such a wonderful cooking electical appliance. I remember back in the day when i had to fry the hush puppies and the french fries on the stove. 7 would be the right setting. If grease starts to pop up on you then youll know its set to high. It actually depends on what kind of stove you have what to set it on. I have kenmore.

It'll be total guess work on your part and potentially very dangerous. Invest in a thermometer next time you're out. But if you stand at the stove the entire time and keep a watchful eye, I would guess that about a 7-8 would be appropriate. But if it starts to smoke turn off the heat and take the pan outside.

7 or 8 should be good. Just please be careful. Use a deep pan where the oil only comes up half way or less. Do a tester to test the heat of your oil. Do NOT put water in your oil. Granny, that's a great way to start a fire. Oil splattering onto a hot element or open flame. Kiss your kitchen goodbye.

Please be careful. Hope this helps!

I would use 7-8. Heat it until a drop or 2 of water splatters good when you drop it in. The hushpuppies will cool it down some, so just cook a few at a time.

This is a very dangerous way to deep fry. Please invest in in an electric fryer. It's way cheaper than replaceing your kitchen, house or worst a life.
My daughter did that once and did not watch carefully. The kitchen caught fire in and it was a disaster.
Please, please don't do it.
