I think a draft is a terrible idea. What impose a draft when we have so many volunteers? Would you expect people to fight with all their heart and soul for a country that forced them into a uniform? The last thing I want is a bunch of peace activists and whimps being forced to the front line. THEY WONT FIGHT, and they will probably cause problems even before that. They would flood the courts, they would flee the country requiring the use of resources that otherwise would be used for better purposes. We should never go back to a draft. THis has to be a volunteer military for our protection.

I know this is a bit old, but I'd like to say some things on the ACTUAL topic.

There SHOULD be a military draft because one; it would teach everyone at least basic skills and provide them with a job right out of high school. Two; it would give everyone a sense a patriotism and respect for their country knowing that they have done their job in protecting and providing for it. Three; it is actually better for the economy to train small military forces every year instead of maintaining one large military, especially during times of peace.

A good example for everyone present is the Iranians. After turning eighteen, they are all (men a women alike) expected to spend at least two to three years in their country's military force, and get this, most of them look forward to doing that! They love the fact that they are able to protect their country and give back to it. As for those who are pacifists or do not believe in war, they are never asked to fire a weapon, and can instead ask for a position in another area such as technological specialties, or medicine.

One final thought for you who think it would be so easy to send a "nuke" over to wipe them out; we are not the only country with that power anymore. If we were to do that, it would be reciprocated just as quickly, and we would all be blown sky-high, and both countries would be decimated. Is that what you really want?

There is NO good reason that there should be a military draft. If it is reinstated it will be just like last time. The HAVE NOTS will serve and the HAVES will find a way to avoid service.

As to bert's assumption that the military will get smarter people and that the people who are in joined out of desperation. I believe the opposite would happen. We have standards that are to be meet, did the guy building your house have to meet any educational standards? or how about the cook behind the counter? I would get out if they brought back the draft because I would be more scared of those people than any enemy out there.

There are a multitude of reasons to join: Love of country, wanting something more than drinking with our buddies, doing something to help our fellow man.

There is no need for a draft. As long as there are courageous young men and women who want an honourable career in the military.

I don't agree with the draft, and I don't think we will ever really need one because we have such a huge voluntary force...but "Bert" did come up with some good ideas as to what positive could come from it; I guess I had never thought of those things...still, the fact remains that I don't believe one will ever become necessary.

A draft is a terrible idea. Todays young people are considerably less intelligent and reliable than past generations and a draft would be a disaster.

the only good reason I can think of, is to have citizens (not residents ) give back to their country for all the benefits they get (way and quality of life here). But a draft will not happen in our lifetime if ever.

I believe the miltary draft should only be used in the case of a country defending it's own soil.
It is every citizen's duty in this case to defend their home and their families. Common sense, no?

There shouldn't be unless there NEEDS to be. Unlike the WW2 generation, whole generations since have been raised to hate the military. Putting them behind a weapon and sticking them in the jungle would be doing more harm than good.
