A member of my family has decided to get married out of country (an island)...I understand that the bride should have "her day"..however, is it wrong that her side, not the grooms, can not afford it and her parents are really struggling financially to be there, is this selfish of her?? Most of her family won't be there. AND, what should my response be when I am approached that I did not show up.....she can be really aggressive and snotty.

I think these destination weddings are ridiculous. Most people can't afford it, and in my opinion it's something only for movie stars.

I would never go to one. If the couple want to get married on an island, they should go alone and have a reception for the families and friends when they get back.

I would tell her that you couldn't afford it! She sounds like someone should tell her how selfish she is being.

I think that's selfish when her own parents are struggling to be there. Maybe they should have two ceremonies, one there and one closer to home so her family could be there. I think she is expecting too much for everyone to be there considering how much it will cost to go.
When asked, I would be honest and say that I can't afford it but giver he my best and send a gift. If she starts being snotty about it then she will look like the immature one for putting you down.

I have missed a few weddings because of the distance (and one that was out of country). I just politely told them I was not able to make it.

Politely extend your congratulations on her wedding, and regrets that you could not attend, due to circumstances beyond your control.

Just RSVP her invitation with a regret, still give her a gift/cheque.
