I know that dying it blond would damage it. Does hair get damaged when it is dyed a darker shade?
thanks in advance

Hello there.Nearly all forms of 'chemical dyes' will damage the hair to some extent, mainly because these dyes contain ammonia,or peroxide. However alot of todays products have deep conditioning formulas, and can come without ammonia(look out for it on the box) thus the result can actually be much better than expected.Transforming from a brunette to a black, myself,I was quite surprised that my hair felt super soft afterwards-then again I have used a semi permanent, personally I would recommend that you 'try out' the shade that you want ,with either a temporary(usually last 6/8 washes) or a semi(20/24 washes) before you decide its something you want to commit to.Also a must-have for aftercare of hair that is dyed,is to religiously use a shampoo/conditioner designed for dyed hair. This will help prevent further damage, and keep your colour looking alive. Regards, roma

One little dye application isn't going to cause harm. It causes invisible damage, and you may not even notice any, but other than that your bigger worry would be whether or not you are allergic to the dye. Do an allergy & strand test. I've used dozens of different sorts of hair color, and haven't had an adverse reaction the entire time. Just make sure you won't by checking first. The one I had the best luck with was Colorsilk.

Bleaching is what damages hair. I just had most of mine cut off after it began breaking. Back to chestnut for me, as the bleached part must have reacted with something else I used and became weaker. Yeesh.

Every time you color your hair it gets damaged because of the ammonia and such that is in the hair dye. Black is the worst color besides bleaching, but as long as your hair is somewhat healthy, it shouldn't do much. Just have a good conditioner. I've done basically everything to my hair, I've bleached it twice, dyed it about 10 times and because of my conditioner, it's healthier than ever. Garnier nutris for colored hair is a good conditioner. Also, if it gets too unhealthy, put conditioner in your hair and cover with a hot towel for about 10 minutes and that should do some help.

Try not to use permanant hair dye- this also means that your roots will show less. I've been dying my hair since I was 13, I'm now nearly 28, the only time my hair got messed up was when I bleached it, which I wouldn't do again.

My hairdresser told me that I couldn't do it any damage dying it dark. Although hair dye sometimes dries hair out, so just make sure you get it cut regularly (every 6 wks) and use an intensive conditioner once a week to keep it moisturised.

No chemical is good for your hair but if you use a semi it not so bad and from brown to black will cove easily with semi. A quasi is the nearest to permanent without damaging chemicals and will last longer than a normal semi. (around 3 months as opposed to 3 weeks)

no matter what color hair is dyed, it will always get damaged, maybe not a lot, but it'll happen. however, because you're going darker, it won't get damaged AS much and certain ingredients may help to make it a bit healthier (maybe a bit more mosturized), but either way, it'll still get damaged. good luck!

well technically.. you dont dye your hair.. you color it..and every chemical you put on your hari does some damage..but coloring your hair every 6 to 8 weeks will not damage is much..it does actaully condition it and make it softer... coloring is better than lightening... but i will tell you this... make for sure you want to go as dark as black because that is a very difficult color to lift..... and if you do decide to go black.. i prefer CHI Black with a 10 Volume peroxide. without heat let it process for 45 minutes. get it done professionally ..dont do a box color.. not good!

dying your hair any colour will damage your hair but as long as you do a conditioning reatment at least once a week then you should be fine. also try using a semi-permanent colour 1st cos at least if you dont like it it will wash out in a few weeks. unless uv got a colour on your hair from a previous time then it mite cling to it but will not do as much damage as permanent colours
