The human soul may also be the 'self'. People with a strong belief in an afterlife and who have experienced near-death, often claim to have seen a tunnel with a strong light at the far end. Others have said they have experienced floating above their bodies while the doctors and nurses attempted resuscitation. We will never know what happened to those who have 'passed over' and not returned.
Some people believe that it is important to have an already created picture [a movie] of your life after this one. When you enter your next life, because you have already created a picture [a movie] of what that life will be like, you will probably experience it as you have imagined it to be. For example, Arabs who have died on the operating table and who have been brought back, say they have experienced a vision of the afterlife in which their are cool courtyards and fountains, date palms and all manner of luxury. Why would an Arab experience this? Simply because this is a view of Paradise.
THE FOLLOWING MAY BE A BIT SCARY BUT DO NOT LET IT WORRY YOU UNDULY.
Doctor Christian Barnard, the first surgeon ever to accomplish a successful heart transplant operation, said in a radio interview many years ago, that the human brain is active for up to nine days after death. So that, even while our bodies rot, our brain remains active. What is happening in the brain is uncertain - unknown.

Honestly, no man knows. Unless a person's body has completely shut down and they amazingly come back to life, no one ever will. You can have all the religion and faith to give you hope that something will happen to the self in death, but no man can guarantee you anything other than a belief or idea about what happens in the afterlife. so if it does become non-existent or is reclothed with the soul, no living person would ever be able to give you a 100% true answer.

I'd like to think that when we die and leave our bodies, we move onto another form of existence or plain. Sometimes I just think we'll end up in the darkness all alone... but thats too depressing!!
So i am leaning more on the happier one... floating into the light and feeling at one with other souls. A sea of souls at ease.... understanding each other without question.
Some would say... going into heaven and chill out with a massive Television screen and eating pizza!
No more worrying about your weight or fashion and any of those silly issues... because it is not an issue anymore. No more wars or crap.
You could ride a tiger around the garden and not get mauled. haha

The self if a funny thing because we only need a Self when we choose to incarnate as a human. We are all part of the divine and go back to it when we 'die'. Its not a difficult thing to understand: imagine the Divine Spirit like an infinately faceted diamond. We, as the Self are but one of those facets and go back to where we come from when our tour here is finished. And when we choose to communicate with the living we show ourselves as a self our contemporaries would recognise.

As we are on this earth we are spirit clothed in a material physical body. When we pass to spirit the material body is left with the brain. We take the soul, which is us, the real inside us and the spirit which houses the soul and its mind and memories to the spirit realms with us.
We are a living energy which on earth here is a slower, heavy vibration and the spirit body is a faster lighter vibration so it is in a different dimension. Atoms and molecules vibrate at different speeds in different vibrations, the faster they vibrate the lighter it they become. The slowr they vibrate the heavier they become as it is on this earth. Thats why we need the material body to house the soul and spirit so we can exist on this earth.
hope i havent gone over the top in explanation for you. take care , Pat

Works a bit like a computer programm running if you switch the power off only human brains shut down slow... When fully shut down you have like a back up battery ie the blood and oxygen in the blood.
When that runns out its like your self data currupts and erases
Then you are fresh meat and spare parts... Thats it. Enjoy life whilst it lasts and nothing after

The self is only a coat that was worn throughout life, the spirit and soul live on for ever.

Death is inevitable. The thief on the cross knew when his would occur, but we can not predict our own. After his death, the crucified criminal went to live in paradise with Jesus. Some of us will also live eternally in God's presence. But others will experience everlasting torment, forever separated from Him.
If we receive Jesus as our Savior, our penalty for sin is paid. We are adopted into God's family, and Heaven is our eternal home. If we reject Jesus, we remain alienated from the Lord and under condemnation for our sin. We are destined to experience eternal judgment. God won't accept any of man's excuses because there is no acceptable defense for unbelief. (Acts 4:12)
Become part of God's family today. Acknowledge your sinfulness, and express your faith in these words:
"God, I have sinned against You. (Romans 3:23) I've followed my own way and refused to give You the right to rule in my life. (Romans 3:10-12) I recognize I am separated from You and cannot rescue myself. I do believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son. I accept the truth of the Scriptures? that His death on the cross paid my sin-debt in full. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) And I ask You to forgive me of my sins. (1 John 1:9) By faith, I receive You, Lord Jesus, as my personal Savior from this moment on."
If you just spoke those words to God, then, like the thief on the cross, you have received salvation? a gift of God's grace. The heavenly Father welcomes every person who comes to Him through His Son, regardless of background, age, or current situation. Through Jesus, the right to enter paradise is yours!

RESURRECTION TO LIFE AND SALVATION FOR ALL POSSIBLE
Your soul is all of you if you are created, if you are born James 2:26 if you die, Psm.115:15-17; 146:3,4; Eze.37:12-14; your soul is you when resurrected.
1Cor.15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. 24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. 25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. 27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him. 28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
1Cor.15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
Heavenly for the new heavens and the earthly for the new earth. 2Pet.3:13; Rev.21:1-5; Isa.65:17; 66:1,22;

Well, being an atheist i dont really believe in life after death. I think that once the brain is dead thats it; its like being asleep. What I have heard about recently are people saying that they see a bright light just before death. saying they see dead loved ones and their 'light'. I didn't really believe it until my grandma said she saw it just before she passed away. And she was a very down to earth person, not religious, and very much a realist. Just makes you wonder...
