Who has the record for the most donations in Great Britain at the moment, and how many donations have they made? I know I'm a very long way away (having just given my tenth last week) but just curious to know. And if anyone knows about bone marrow donations, how long it takes, does it really hurt etc, I would be interested to know. I think that maybe I am selfish because I said I would only donate bone marrow for someone close to me, but I started giving blood as both muy grandparents were very seriously ill a while back, and without receiving the blood they did, they would no longer be here. So I'm just trying to put something back into the system and save someone elses grandparents. I'm so scared of needles it's untrue, but every 4 months I go and give my 3/4 pint so maybe now I should look into bone marrow donation. What do you think? Am I selfish for saying I would only give bone marrow for someone close to me?

ohhh i know just how you feel
i am now 52 years old and have given over 35 pints or half litres as they are nowadays and every time i quake in my shoes and just like you i started because i felt i needed to give something back. I gave my last pint about 2 weeks ago, it still made me nervous and i still dislike needles, but i am not nearly as scared as i used to be. And although i lie there on the bed hyperventilating i know that basically it doesn't really hurt and i that i am fine.
No you are not a coward, all those people reading this who have never had the courage to go even once and who always find some kind of an excuse....you know the kind.... "i had measles and they don't let you give blood if you had measles do they?" they are the cowards.
As for bone marrow, i also signed on to that register, but i was never called. They take you off at 50, i am told it is quite painful afterwards, though of course you are asleep when it happens, but you could always contact the Antony Nolon trust and ask and i defy any one to call you a coward if you decide not to become a potential donor. the fact that you have given 10 blood donations says you are far from being a coward.

There are 2 techniques of assisting somebody in the event that they want a bone marrow transplant. One is the place they get rid of bone marrow from the hip bone. any incorrect way is by using skill of giving a blood donation and that they use the stem cells or something comparable from that. I artwork on the blood provider in Australia and there is unquestionably no longer adequate people donating blood. only a million in 30 people donate blood yet a million in 3 persons are going to need a blood product a while of their existence. And this is humorous how some people only start up donating blood after a family contributors member has won blood products for an ailment or accident. If only that they had donated only before that, many people could have been helped. yet greater advantageous late than by no skill! whether you're no longer a tournament on your buddy, you're able to be for somebody else. What a blessing to save somebody's existence.

I guess that if the blood transfusion service approached you telling that you had a bone marrow match for someone seriously ill, you would probably reconsider.
