The original Hebrew word, ha-almah, really just means "young woman." The word has no meaning beyond what we find in English with "young woman" or "maid," but it was translated into Greek with the word parthenos, which means virgin.
given this , it suggests that Mary was just a young woman and not a virgin

Mary was one of the consecrated temple virgins who had taken a perpetual vow of chastity. Like many such consecrated virgins she was bethrothed to an older man, probably a widower. This kind of arrangement provided the temple virgin with security and protection, while providing her caretaker/husband with companionship and domestic service. But the perpetual vow would remain in effect for life.
What sets Mary apart from other such perpetual virgins is the fact that she enabled the Savior of the world to come into the world, by freely agreeing to be His mother at God's request, allowing God to impregnate her so that her Son, the Messiah, would be both God and man.
For this unique role she played in salvation history, she is honored above all the other saints by the Christian Church. Obviously she is not worshipped, as that would constitute idolatry, which is absolutely condemned by the Christian Church.

The Chosen mother of Jesus. This is from my Faith, CHRISTIANITY, not only is it just from some belief, it is the truth and it actually happened. Ignore all the smart alec answers. Some Catholics worship her as an idol. The commandments say do not worship any other gods or create any idols. She was a daughter of Christ and she was innocent. Mary was a virgin. She became pregnant with Jesus without having sex. Now some may think this to be a lie or just plain weird, but it is what happened, it was the work of God. God bless you, pray to God to answer your questions, you can also find them by reading the Bible. I'll pray for you, take care.

Yes Mary was an actual virgin, impregnated by the Holy Spirit, and mother to Jesus. It is the basis of the Christian religion.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ, the mother of God
Mary (Judeo-Aramaic ×ר×× MaryÄm "Bitter") was the mother of Jesus. According to the New Testament, and at the time of his conception she was the betrothed wife of Saint Joseph. In Christian and Islamic tradition, she miraculously remained virginal through the conception and birth of Jesus, as foretold by the angel Gabriel . According to the Protoevangelium of James, her parents were Joachim and Anne.
God Bless You

Mary was a virgin prior to the birth of Jesus. Matthew 1:34 states But Mary said to the angel: “How is this to be, since I am having no intercourse with a man?”
She later had other children, as was the custom, with her husband, Joseph. Matthew 12:46,27: While he was yet speaking to the crowds, look! his mother and brothers took up a position outside seeking to speak to him. So someone said to him: “Look! Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak to you.
And Matthew 13:53-56: Now when Jesus had finished these illustrations he went across country from there. And after coming into his home territory he began to teach them in their synagogue, so that they were astounded and said: “Where did this man get this wisdom and these powerful works? Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Where, then, did this man get all these things?”

Our Lady was Jesus of Nazereths mother on earth.
Jesus obeyed the commandments the same as everyone else,so Jesus honoured his mother, something some people think they are too good to do.
Also at the end of the gospel according to John Our Lady is made our mother too.

I think if you really know that little of the Christian faith and are curious about it your best bet to get the basics would be a childs book.. and then after that when you know the basic story line you could perhaps read the Bible .. [please note I don't mean that as a snide responce but as hopefully a helpfull idea]
