She wakes up in the middle of the night crying with her legs hurting. I am wondering could this just be "growing pains" or is it something that I should have checked out?

I have four kids and all of them have had this. The way it was described to me is that the bone is growing faster than the muscle thus causing the muscle pain. If you can think of it...and I never could... you should have them stretch that part of the leg before sleep. Since I couldnt think of that and dealt with it when it happened. I gave my kids motrin and either a hot water bottle to put on their leg or one of those bean bags you can warm up in the microwave. The latter being their favorite. We own two of them and that works pretty well. I hope this helps. Of course you should also mention this to your pediatrician.
Best wishes.

My friend's daughter is 6 and wakes up in the middle of the night with leg pains, and she was even doing it when she was 4 too. Her Mom is a nurse and says it's growing pains, and so does her pediatrician. You can check with your Dr., but my guess is that growing pains are what it is. Gentle massage can help the pain and get her back to sleep.

My boys got the leg pains during growth splurts. My 4 year old daughter rarely complains of leg pain & never at night. Take your child to the MD. There are so many things it could be. My friends daughter has arthitis. gl

I thought growing pains were in their teen years, thats when my boys were complaining of leg pain. It could be poor circulation too. Call the doctor and ask.

both my boys did the same thing, i just gave them half a dose of panadol and they woke up fine in the morning. if you are finding it starts happen more often maybe a visit to the doctor would'nt be a bad idea.

I think it probably is growing pains, but I'd mention it to the pediatrician the next time she has a checkup.

My 4 yr old never has this problem. I would have it checked out even if its nothing, its better to know for sure.
