I adopted a stray cat- and when I took her to the vet he said that my cat weights double what she should he gave me so "bland diet" food to feed her. she didn't eat the kibbles so i went back and he gave me some wet food with a "better aroma" now, my kitty still meows and beggs for food but somthimes when she is really hungry she'll eat. is this the right thing 2 do?

I would go back to her original diet but give her less of it.

Phase it in, mix it in, but my cats hate that stuff also and do the same thing. Very frustrating to get past this.

I'd try a bit of what the cat likes to eat to stimulate the appetite, and supplement with the other.

How old is the cat? If it's old and set in it's ways, you've got to cut the cat some slack even if it means obesity wins. If the cat is young, it will eat, eventually.

Wear earplugs when the going gets tough, or turn up the stereo.

Good luck!

You are doing exactly the right thing. This stray got into the habit of foraging for food and was probably eating a lot of human food. When an animal gets used to eating the same things we do, they are reluctant to go back to eating normal cat food. Do not give in to your cat, this will just reinforce its behavior and continue its cycle of not eating till he gets what he wants. He will eat when he is hungry. If you want to entice his appetite a little, warm up the food in the microwave to make the smell really come out of it. Stick to your guns! You are not doing anything to hurt the cat. Remember they are stubborn but will come around when they know they can't win.

Since the cat was a stray it was most likely living on whatever it came across. My son found a stray on our place here in Indiana,we took it to the vet and they did the same as far as a diet. The cat(Lucky)would`nt touch it`s food. So,we just left it out and eventually when it was hungry enough it would eat.Now it won`t eat anything else.It just take`s awhile for them to get use to a new food diet, just like it would us.Just make sure there`s alway`s plenty to drink and the cat will be just fine.Good luck with the new cat!!!

Cat are tempermental, she may miss her previous owners. You need to play with her alot.Get a string and tie something on it like a cat toy and let her chase it and grab for it.It will help her lose some weight.Try buying some can salmon and pouring the juices over the food or add just a little salmon to the food until she gets use to the flavor.Just like everything we have likes and dislikes. Her previous owners fed her well but to much and I am sure just like us her fat cells are craving what they no longer are getting and she meows in hopes you will finally give her what her bodly wants. If she is happy except for the food part then I wouldn't worry to much, however you could consult with another vet.

I would just leave it out.
When's she hungry, believe she will eat. Obese cats are at high risk for major health problems. Getting her weight under control will ensure a longer, healthier life. I don't think a few cat treats once in a while will do much harm either.

Just make sure she keeps eating. My daughter switched foods on her cat. It wouldn't eat for days on end. She finally stopped eating altogether. If a cat stops eating, even by choice, there system shuts down, and it is almost impossible to get them to eat again. Most die then. I took her to the vet and finally got her to start eating with moist food. I own her now and she is healthy.

Hi! Keep trying types of food until she will accept something. Sometimes cats get accustomed with one kind of food and they will never accept anything else. DO NOT just leave the food in the tray at all times: give it to her, if she's not eating then try later.

I'd listen to your vet. If your cat is twice it's normal weight, then it's diet time.

I'm 20 pounds over. Trust me, I whine and complain every chance I get when I get served salad instead of steak.

Be a good cat parent:

This page has the best info I've ever found on cat nutrtion:

EDIT: I might add that my overweight male has lost two pounds eating healthy and is still a bit chunky. One or one and a half more should do it but it's up to his diet.

I agree with notyou311. Changing her diet might not be the best thing to do. Go back to the old diet and serve smaller amounts. Have you ever drastically changed your diet? I did after a heart attack it sucks! I've got to go, I'm craving a porter house and ribs. To bad I have to settle for yogurt and a fruit cup. Take care.
