A friend of mine was arrested in 2001 and her belongings were taken by the police officers, this included her passport, social security card, and other items. The arrest took place in Brooklyn, NY. Where can she pickup her belongings? Where are they stored? Is it too late?

The police station that booked her for her crime should have her belongings stored in their evidence room or other location. If they no longer have her items, then she needs to ask what happened to them. Sometimes, personal effects are transported to the jail or prision facility where the person is going to serve out their sentence(s). If the items weren't transported to the jail or prision & are deemed lost, she'll have to reapply for her SSN card & passport. If she lost clothing, then it'll have to be bought again.

To get the SSN card replaced, she can visit any Social Security office to fill out a form for a free card & receive a paper print out temporary card until the regular one is mailed. I don't own a passport so I'm not sure how to go about replacing one.

At the Property Clerks Office on Gold Street right next to the 84 Pct in downtown Brooklyn. She should have a voucher for her property and a property release form. She will need to present that as well as Photo I.D....If the property is considered evidence of a crime and the case is still pending the property will be kept until the case is adjudicated.
