A 88 year old man called me to bring him a book about having a happy life from the hebrew library. he calims to be a jewish scholar that taught all of his life at the university level and yet he divorced his wife when he was 75 becasue he said she was stupid

People lie because it's easier than telling the truth. The truth hurts...and some people can't handle it.
As for the 88 year old man who claims he's a Jewish scholar that taught at the university level...well, I could believe that a highly educated person like that (to teach at university level, one must have a PhD) would divorce a spouse for being "stupid." Professors are not known for their humility.
If he is lying, though, perhaps he's doing it to feel special. I knew one elderly lady who went on and on about being a "poor, old Jewish widow-woman" but her daughter would just shake her head and say, "She's as Jewish as the Pope." She felt that saying she was Jewish made her special, although the lie was so annoying that it was actually painful to hear it over and over. One can't help but pity people like that.

You're absolutely right. Now why on earth would you have married such an intolerant guy? And still you're bringing him books from the library?!? You're so co-dependent.
But he is right. You can't spell worth a darn, and to some people, that makes you look stupid.

because some people rather tell a lie than to admit to the truth, for it might just embarassed them. in front of others.
