A thyroid tumor, left untreated, probably will not kill you directly unless it is a rare cancerous tumor (malignant). Less than 1% of all thyroid nodules, or tumors, are cancerous. You probably do not need to worry, but I strongly recommend you spend the money to have a biopsy so you can rule out cancer and not worry.
However, even if it is benign, the nodule could cause overproduction of thyroid hormone, called hyperthyroidism. If you have symptoms of hyperthyroidism, which can elevate your metabolism, make you feel hot, lead to weight loss, increased appetite, heart palpitations, trembling hands/nervousness, insomnia, etc, you would benefit from treatment. The symptoms are usually controlled by the use of anti-thyroid medications to reduce the amount of hormone in your body, which will make you feel better.
If you are not experiencing symptoms, and the biopsy shows that your nodule is benign, you can discuss regular monitoring with your doctor.

there are very many diferent 'scholarship' type of things out there for people without medical insurance. from what i know about tumors and thyroid (i have an underfunctioning thyroid). it would be best to talk to a doctor and look for ways around the lack of medical insurance. tumors grow. they dont just go away. you should start trying to solve the problem while you are in general good health and can solve it.

I bumped into a good online resource about hypothyroidism (a desease I'm trying to overcome myself).
Check it out here http://hypothyroidism.toptips.org
I have personally tested this method and I had great results.
Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the levels of thyroid hormones in the blood are increased and is characterised by a metabolic imbalance. The thyroid gland is a small endocrine gland located at the base of the neck. It produces thyroid hormone, which control various body functions. Hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis results from excess quantities of thyroid hormone in the body.
With the metod that i posted above you can definitely get rid of hypothyroidism

If it is a benign tumor no wit will not kill you, but it will interfere with your thyroid and you could gain a huge amount of weight which would give you a heart attack so technically the tumor will have killed you.
If it is malignant then it is cancer and it will kill you much faster, it must come out, unless you have decided that you do not want to live through cancer treatment process

It would be fatal only if it were malignant. Please see about going to a free clinic and getting treatment. There are other things that you can develop from a tumor of your thyroid besides cancer. It will change your whole body and needs to be treated. However, if you just leave it alone without treatment, yes, eventually it would be fatal.

Sorry to hear you have this. But I wouldn't start making your will out yet. Does your doctor know you don't have insurance? Maybe you can make payments or find a clinic somewhere, where you can pay by what you earn. Some states will cover some of the costs. You need to do some research and go talk to these people to find out what your options are.
I found this site that may help answer some questions, but don't self diagnose this. Eventually, it could become life threatening.
Here is the site:

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that sits low on the front of the neck. Your thyroid lies below your Adam’s apple, along the front of the windpipe. The thyroid has two side lobes, connected by a bridge (isthmus) in the middle. When the thyroid is its normal size, you’re unlikely to be able to feel it.
All types of hyperthyroidism are due to overproduction of thyroid hormones, but the condition can develop in several ways.
Thyroid hormone production can be suppressed or halted completely in these ways: https://tr.im/B4KYK

There are many benign tumors that are harmless but, unless you know what type of tumor you have, yours could potentially be harmfull. It would be advisable to see a Doctor, I'm sorry to say.
Age plays a part in these types of problems, its always more likely to be dangerous with advanced age.

Look into a clinic that can help you get this taken care of. Depending on the type of tumor, it can kill you. Talk to the doctor who told you that you have it. They should be able to refer you for some help.

If you don't have insurance, there are programs that the government offers that can help you. Medicare and such. There are people that can and will help you.
And to answer your question, yes, the cancer will spread and kill you.
