Too many things to do over there. Tips are mainly depending on how long would be yr staying and I feel the best for you is to follow a tourist guide. But I've below advises for you.

1.-When in Rome beware of the pick pokets, mainly in the crowded tourist areas, on the bus, on the metro, etc. Better you buy a strapped satchel to wear as a belt and where you'll put all yr money and valuables. Don't wear costly garments, don't show expensive watches or jewels. Use the common sense and you'll be safe.
2.- While there, take the opportunity to throw a coin over your shoulder (back turned) into the Trevi's fountain. It's said that one coin will ensure your return, two means you will fall in love in Rome, and three that you will marry that love.
3.- Take the Metro (subway) and visit the town by stopping and walking the highlights that you can find in any good tourist guide. Don't use taxis that in Italy are much too expensive.
4.-Even if it's an additional point that you didn't request for, I would recommend you to avoid the big restaurants in the tourist routes. Move a 2-3 blocks out from there and look for small restaurants (trattoria) where the italian residents are going to eat. Ask the waiter (that's almost always is also the trattoria's owner) what's their best food for you to taste. He will feel honoured with your confidence but you'll always remember Italian cooking that's not the one of the hotels or tourist (or abroaders) restaurants.

Don't forget my advises, follow them and enjoy Italy.

I don't know how many days you will be there but I was in Rome a few years ago with just my girlfriend and we had a great time!! So I will tell you about our two days there and what we did. I will be listing more than 3 places to see but some of them are very close to each other so basically you just walk from one place to another really easy.

Day 1
The Roman Forum which is basically just old ruins of roman buildings and statues. Once you walk through you basically just walk straight into the Colosseum. At the Colosseum there are great tour guides just standing outside waiting to do tours. I highly recommend getting a tour for this part our guy was awesome and he showed us all the little things we would have missed. After our tour we grabbed a quick bite to eat and the view we had was of the Colosseum it was very cool. We then walked over to the Trevi Fountain and did the backwards coin toss it which you have to do when going to Rome. It was starting to get late at this point but the Pantheon is within walking distance so I recommend going there as well. Thats a pretty full day but liked I said everything is within walking distance so if your there you might as well take advantage of the time and make sure you have good walking shoes. We ended the night with a great Italian dinner and a couple glasses of wine!

Day 2
We reserved this day for The Vatican only and there is so much to see there you will be glad you take the whole day to see it. When you go there you will be handed plenty flyers for guided tours and we were planning on getting a tour but unfortunately we didn't make on time for our tour. So once we made it down there it was the longest line I have ever seen but don't be discouraged it goes fast and its worth the wait. We did the audio tour where you walk around with earphones punch in numbers of the statues or paintings and you get info about that specific thing. I thought it was cool doing the tour that way because you can go at your pace. I thought that The Vatican musuem was one of the best I went to while in Italy lots of great statues and paintings. The best part was at the of the musuem thre is The Sistine Chapel which is beautiful. After the musuem you walk out into St Peter's Square and then into St Peter's Basilica. This is the church where the pope lives and it is so grand and ENORMOUS!!! I was in awe at the size of the place.

There are so many different places to visit while in Rome so I want to go back see more of course but I am very happy with I saw with the limited time we had. I hope this helps you out!!
