I love them but they can be stubborn. It's all in how you train your dog when it come to the chinchilla's safety. Your best bet is to not let them in the same area unsupervised. Any dog that isn't trained properly will chase your chins.
PS: I have 2 chins, 2 hunting dogs and a poodle and I trust the hunting dogs over the poodle because if their training.

No better breed if you ask me. I have 2 girls, both 4 years old and they are wonderful. However... a Shih Tzu is much like a baby in the amount of attention they require (not to mention grooming). They are a true member of the family with unique personalities and can be quite opinionated at times. Having said that, they are the most loyal creatures you will ever encounter and will love you unconditionally. I say do some research on the breed - all dogs like to play with small furry things, so the current pets could always be at risk.

i have a 3 month old shih tzu called Scruff...and it is the cutest little thing.it loves people and hates being left alone at any time.it basically loves to cuddle u and give u loads of kisses.it enjoys eating fruits...u name it...from watermelon,to bananas, and apples...i guess the main problem most people have with shih tzus is the long hair.but the great thing is,it doesnt shed! so far i plan on keeping my little Scruff's hair short.i just give him a trim every now and then .it really isnt that difficult if the hair isnt extremely long to begin with.with the hair all short...he really looks all scruffy, mischevious, and of course- adorable. all i can say is,shih tzus are definitely great dogs.

Go to www.shihtzu.org. That is the Shih Tzu Club's website. They give you valuable information on the breed.
The pros would be that they are sweet, very loving, and are easy to train.
The cons would be that they require a lot of grooming, a lot of grooming, and did I mention, a lot of grooming?
Good luck! I know that you will do well!

Very personable and fun loving dogs--high spirited and rarely bored. Tend to be very social and friendly to all. Lack of personality is NOT a Shih Tzu problem...! They will make you laugh.
They can be VERY stubborn, opinionated and hard to train (particularily housebreaking). A classical Shih Tzu motto: "My way rules--I don't like yours, so go away with your silly demands!"
They have a strong tendancy to put on weight--it's important to keep them thin...!
Tend not to mat up as much as other longer coated dogs (Maltese), but they still are a high commitment to grooming dog.
They make just about the most adorable puppies in the world...!

I have a 3 months old shih tzu and I love him so much! He is so cuddly. He sleeps most of the day but when he's awake he loves to play with you. He has a long hair but he doesn't shed! He can smell bad at time though cause of all that hair.

I have a shih tzu named patch. it is a male. my shih tzu is very protective. he doesn't like other dogs & small wild children. they are to much for him to handle. he also smells really bad. since he is kinda old he sits & lays around the house all day which makes it stinky. we don't let his hair grow out long. we cut it every now & then.
sorry if those might make you change your mind but i hope they don't. cuz that's just my dog. shih tzu are normaly very nice companions & good lap dogs. good luck!
lucky! u have chinchillas... i wish i had some though...

nicely, once you will be getting one in 2 weeks then shouldn't you already be attentive to this information? despite. lol besides.... i admire shih tzus. experts: Hypoallergenic super with young babies and different pets/canines Loving friendly Cons: no longer the terrific watch canines services to have average respiratory issues. lots of grooming sturdy success inclusive of your new canines!
