Mat 16:
13.Then Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
14.And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15.He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16.And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17.And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18.And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19.And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Here Jesus is telling us, that this revelation came by God not man.
------------------------
17.And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
---------------This is the revelation-------------------------------
[q]Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God[eq]
[18.And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.]-------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------This rock means the revelation, not Peter.--------------
Yes Jesus is our rock. The rock is symbolic of the foundation that Jesus is [q]Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God[eq]
Jesus is the temple, also called the Rock, and many other names that all point to one of His awesome characteristics. Here the rock is not pointing to Jesus but to the revelation and by whom it came. No matter who had got this revelation, John.or me or you, Jesus would have said the same thing.[q]upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it[eq].
The first thing we know when we first recieve the Holy Ghost from God is that Jesus is The Lord
"Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God"

when we look at the Greek of Matthew 16:18 we see something that is not obvious in the English. "...you are Peter (ÏÎÏÏοÏ, petros) and upon this rock (ÏÎÏÏα, petra) I will build My church..." In Greek nouns have gender. It is similar to the English words actor and actress. The first is masculine and the second is feminine. Likewise, the Greek word "petros" is masculine; "petra" is feminine. Peter, the man, is appropriately referred to as Petros. But Jesus said that the rock he would build his church on was not the masculine "petros" but the feminine "petra." Jesus, who knew the heart of Peter, was not saying that Peter, the movable stone, would be the immovable rock upon which the Church would be built. Rather, it would be built upon Jesus and it was this truth that Peter had affirmed what he said to Jesus, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God," (Matt. 16:16). This is consistent with scripture elsewhere where the term rock is sometimes used in reference of God, but never of a man.Jesus is the rock on which the church is built
The truth is that the only foundation is Jesus. The only rock of truth is Jesus Christ and that we, as his redeemed, need to keep our eyes on him. We are to look to no one else as the foundation, the source, or the hope in which the church is built. The Church is built upon Jesus, not Peter.

I believe that the rock upon which the church is built on is the Word of God. It is Truth and God is Truth. Jesus and the Word are One.( John 1) The gates of hell cannot prevail against God's Word. So the answer is Jesus, for He is the Word and the Truth. Whatsoever we bind and loose we bind and loose the Word of God using the authority of the Word, and we do all things in faith in and by faith.

I think the rock refers to the fact that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. It makes sense to me that Christ would say this here, but I think we cannot know for sure, what exactly he is talking about. I do know that Christ is referred to as the rock of our salvation in some religions. Perhaps this provides some insight into what you were asking.

Well, Peter means "Rock" and Catholics say Peter is the rock he was referring to. Our Protestant Pastor said the rock is Peter's confession that Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God.

The rock is Jesus Christ revealed by the Holy Spirit.
edit:
His church is all to whom Jesus Christ has been spiritually revealed, and that follow him.

Jesus is the rock on which we build our faith and he is the corner stone (cape stone) of the church.
Petter helped to start the church of Jesus but he is now dead.

The answer is in the last of the 17th verse right before the statement of Jesus--"my Father which is in Heaven".
