Mixing liquor and beer is fine. The reason they say "beer before liquor, never sicker," is because people get drunk off of beer, and then start drinking liquor without thinking how hard it will hit them. By the way the saying also goes "liquor before beer, you're in the clear." If you know your tolerance, you're fine.
