don't tell a kid 'not to do them' and offer no reasons behind it. you've got to make them aware of the health issues associated with drug and alcohol use. they also need to be aware of the legal reprocussions like jail or prison. let them know that drugs can also alter a persons behavior or moods which can make them violent or victims of violence. drugs and alcohol also inhibit proper judgement which can lead to car accidents or injury. tell them 'why' not just 'dont'

There are no harmless drugs. Everything has drawbacks. Taking drugs that are illicit or not prescribed for the individual can lead to very serious effects. You do not always recognize these things right away.
Drugs like meth, crack, cocaine, can permanently damage your heart and can kill. Nearly every drug will either have damaging effects on the liver and or kidneys, many effect the brain directly and as already stated can damage the heart.
Taking certain drugs are illegal and others need a prescription because they can be harmful if taken without need and in the correct dose and correct way.
Those who succeed in life and continue to succeed though out their life time do not use drugs.
It may seem cool but take a look around at the people who are taking and the people who are not. Which ones are smart, successful, and admired? Which ones are immature, fail to accomplish anything important, and have the respect of adults and kids who are accomplished?
Drugs like: vicodin, oxicotin, oxicodone, hydromorphone, atavan, xanax, ambien, mscotin, haldol and many more make you dopey (yes it is called dope for a reason) You are not clear headed, They make you constipated, they slow your reflexes, they can cause you to stop breathing (when this happens you die), they can cause you to be sick to your stomach and throw up,
Something as simple as tylenol can damage your liver and kidneys, which can in turn lead to brain damage. So there is no safe drugs for you to play around with. everything has it's drawbacks.

no matter what kind of drugs, prescription or illegal, the are bad for you. Pot makes your brain function really slow and could cause you problems there. But the stuff that higher, like cocaine, crack, LSD, etc. can kill you at a young age. You have no control over yourself when you take these drugs and your life is changed forever. Your moods change and you get angry at people you love for no reason and all you can think of is where your next fix is coming from. You start stealing from your parents or friends because you need the money to get your next fix. People will begin to not trust you any more ot want anything to do with you because of the drugs.
So, yes drugs are very bad for kids and adults. So, keep off them and be good to yourself and the people you love.

They should know all the FACTS about how drugs work in the body, including how they can make you feel good.
They should understand the psychology of desiring to experiment with drugs, especially for adolescents who may have a reasonable inclination to want to escape what they see as a stressful, boring life.
They should understand the real consequences of drug taking, without ANY exaggeration or scare tactics - and understand that despite the short term positives a young person might perceive, the end result is almost all negative, and what is really lost isn't mental health or social status but an opportunity to learn healthy ways to cope with stresses (an opportunity to grow up instead of trying to be something you're not).
In other words, they should understand precisely why drug taking is risky for the **average** person (who gets away with it and isn't badly harmed), and what's really at stake, in realistic terms.
Edited to add: because most kids aren't stupid. If they have accurate and complete information, and self-respect (learned by being treated respectfully), they will choose in their own best interest and decide to avoid taking drugs.

They should know all of the outcomes. Emphasis should be put on the bad ones. They should also be made aware that it is illegal in most places for a reason, and the people in the movies who do it often are made to do it do give them a sense of character in the movie. It's not because most people actually do it. Explain what happened to the many people who did drugs, all of the famous stars who were killed at a young age.

The truth. Like pot isn't a gateway drug and that it's not even close to the same category as crack or heroine. The should know EVERYTHING, not just that they shouldn't take them. But know why they shouldn't take them, making an informed decision. Rather then an ignorant one. My son at 11 knows more about drugs then some adults I have met and I trust that when he does come across people that will try to get him to do drugs that he will make the right decision.

And the thumbs down I receive is perfect examples of why people need to be fully educated on drugs. And the varying degrees of drugs, not just what the government tells us, and the excuses we use to justify our abuse of alcohol and cigarettes.

educate really what the drugs do. kill brain cells etc... show them examples of lives that were ruined by drugs. Tell them that families are torn apart because of them. Things like sports, real friends, jobs, material possesions are a thing in the past because you cant take part in anything if you are an addict. Your goal in life is to never be without drugs and you will become so lost you will do anything to get them.
let them watch Intervention on A&E its a great show with many examples of ruined lives and families over the drugs, gambling, eating disorders and so on

Drugs are highly addictive. They cause you to do destructive and irresponsible things. Most likely you will end up getting arrested, destroying your life and the life of your family. This may sound extreme - but there are literally thousands of people suffering the consequences of someone's drug habits. I speak from experience. My sister started experimenting withmarijuana in HS. She is now a drug addict, alcoholic and is about to face trial for 1st degree arson for setting fire to someone's house - and yes, she had been taking drugs at the time. Really think about the path you are embarking on before you decide to take a hit. The pain and suffering is not worth it.

What may seem fun now can have more serious consequences in the future. Sure you had a good time now, but what if your child is born with birth defects? What if your serotonin levels are too depleted to return to normal levels? What if your neural pathways have been permanently damaged?
Also take into account that many drugs are not pure products. Many contain trace levels of poison and other toxic chemicals. It is easier to OD now than it has ever been... especially with the synthetic drugs: Ketamin, GBH and Meth.
