well all dogs bark, we have a beagle and she barks to alert us of any noise going on outside. Other than that she is a very good girl...They are awesome dogs to have require lots of walks and keep them busy or they will get into something they are supposed to.
Beagles are not stipid dogs yes they do put their nose to the ground and follow a scent they are hunting dogs they are bread for a purpose not like other dogs lkike toy dogs or whatever you call them and of course people that have them in the a city setting know their dogs can get VERY bored. They have to be kept busy.

off your original topic, but you had better beware because you are getting the Houdini of the dogs. I had a pair of beagles at one point and they literally climbed chain link fences, they dug under them. They pried wood off a fence post. These are some crafty dogs. Very lovable. very gentle with kids and the sweetest dogs you will ever have. They do bark when they see, hear or smell something they want. They love to track cats and squirrels and rabbits. And when they reach the location will bay at the animal they tracked. When you come home from work or whatever, expect the load and incessant howling and barking that goes with a dog that is in love with you. Congrats and enjoy the dog.

Dogs bark & they have a weird one that you'll just have to get used to. You can teach them not to bark when they are puppies so give that a try.
Never let a beagle off leash. They put their noses to the ground and follow a scent & never give up.

Beagle barking is one of the most annoying. And they do it too much. Don't get a beagle. Your neighbors wont like you.

Expanding on Lucy's answer here, let me warn you that beagles, no matter what anyone wants to say about them being "cute", etc., are the STUPIDEST dogs I've ever known to exist. I have first hand experience with that, the last time being as I drove down a small highway and came upon a small group of dogs that were walking down the right side of the road, and I took time to see what breeds they were in order to anticipate their behavior as I drove by and wonder how slow I needed to go. I saw that one of them was a beagle, and I said, either to myself or aloud to my wife, "That beagle is so stupid that it will probably run out in front of our car as I pass by and get hit, even though it has no need to go that way and is not going that way now." And I kid-you-NOT, that is EXACTLY what that dog did!! EXACTLY!! And, as could be anticipated, I hit it! I could feel it as it rolled under my car and rolled free out the back end, and it actually got up and ran off with the other dogs. I have no clue whatsoever how that dog managed to live through being hit by my small VW Jetta, but it did, and I've never seen that dog since. I don't know whether it died later or not, but I've not really seen that group of dogs anymore. Maybe one or two individually from time to time, but not as a group, and NEVER have I seen that beagle again. Lucy says it nice in "They put their noses to the ground and follow a scent & never give up", but let me tell you that in that persistence, they lose sight of the bigger issues, including whether there is a car or truck bearing down on them at almost highway speed. I had a former boss who had one that did something equally stupid, and an uncle who had one decades ago who did EXACTLY what the one I ran over did. I know they're "loveable" and "cute" and all, but they're as stupid as the day is long and you DEFINITELY need to protect them from their own stupidity or singlemindedness. Treat them as you would a two-year-old who has the mobility to get into ANYTHING, and not the wisdom to stay away from same! You won't feel good when you see them seriously harmed or dead when and if (most likely) they get into something seriously deadly. I wish the best for you. God Bless you.

Well, barking is very natural for a dog (obviously) and is very hard to prevent it. If you live in a very boring neighborhood, they might be quiet because there is nothing to bark at. It would also be helpful if you left it inside (for a short period) with you and no cat, that would just make it worse. Try to let your dog live in a very peaceful and calm setting.

I had a beagle and she howled all of the time! She was so annoying. They are not great inside dogs. They're made for staying outdooors. I had an apartment when I had her, but I ended up giving her away because of her howling. I loved her she was a good dog, but not for an apartment.
