Since this country was founded by a set of rights, one is the freedom of religion. You have the right to believe what you want, if it’s god or something else. And the separation of church and state. The founding fathers knew that religion needed to stay out of politics.

Most people will judge you ONLY one what you believe, instead of what you stand for. How you act and are as a person. That seems to be missing from this country. If you are a good, honest, trustworthy, loving, caring and loyal person that is not enough. It only matters if you believe in god and that jesus is the son of god.

There probably has been a few atheists and agnostics in government. They probably just weren't that open about it.

You'd think these days people would be more politically savvy. It seems like politicians use religion. Why people can't see it... I don't know.

I don't think it matter so much that someone "believes in God and that Jesus is the son of God" so much as you SAY you believe in God and that Jesus is the son of God.

An outed agnostic or atheist would have problems saying that.

But... maybe I just too jaded and have watched too much political news shows?? lol

Edited to add:

Oh yeah, and in the state of Texas it is in the Texas State constitution that to be elected into political office in this state you have to believe in a "higher power" (weirdly right after it is mentioned that there shall be no religious test!).

I think there are a few other states with similar "rules".

What are you talking about? Atheists and agnostics are not barred from voting or running for office. Atheists have been elected to office as well - Jesse Ventura was an outspoken atheist. In some parts of the country it helps get votes if a pol panders to religion and brags about his/her religious beliefs. In other parts it has no effect. I live in the northeast - I've never met anyone here who would refuse to vote for a pol if that pol was an atheist.

And unfortunately if you're looking for "good, honest, trustworthy, loving, caring, and loyal" people among politicians, you're going to be waiting a long time.

CHRISTIANS. Without their belief in pain for proof, this might be a peaceful planet to live on. We may be able to control pollution instead of expecting the worse to happen to prove some man written philosophy from the book of Revelations. Most "sincere" Christians that I have talked with are living for the moment of doom. Is that not sad????????

They can. And have been. I suspect many have been and only claimed to be a theist to avoid controversy. I think many many people do that.

I agree with you and your opinion. Your actions speak louder than your words or thoughts on things...but people can't seem to figure that out.
