The one with the 4 and the 8 wins (unless the flop is suited and the other guy's 4 is the same suit.) The reason why is that you only use the best 5 cards.

One player has 3,4,5,6,7 and the other has 4,5,6,7,8 It's a higher straight. He wins

easy question
best 5 cards win
each person technically has 6 cards at the moment
A-4 hand has A-3-4-5-6-7
4-8 hand has 3-4-5-6-7-8

The best 5 card hand for A-4 is 3-4-5-6-7 ---- a 7 high str8
The best 5 card hand for 4-8 is 4-5-6-7-8 ---- an 8 high str8

So player 2 has the best hand at the moment

With one card left to come, assuming there are no flush draws, Player 1 cannot win the hand outright. An 8 would split the pot, and any other card will not help player 1

for starters a flop is 3 cards and when the hand is over there are 5 cards on the board.

but in your example if you had A4 and the board was 3567J (using one other card that won't have an outcome and assuming suits don't matter because nobody has a flush) then the highest hand (the nuts) is a 9-hi straight. Somebody would have to have 89 in their hands and then their hand would be 56789.

The next best hand is an eight hi straight, if someone holds 48. their hand is 45678.

then, the 3rd best hand is a 7hi straight, for anybody that has a 4.

so the person with A4 has a 7 hi straight. The person with 48 has an 8hi straight.

8 hi straight beats a 7hi straight. the person with 48 in their hand wins.

As others have pointed out, there cannot be four cards on the flop. So if there are four cards out you are already on the turn. There is one more card to come.

The player with A4 has a seven high straight.

The player with the 84 has an eight high straight. So right now this player is winning.

The player with A4 is drawing dead in this situation. There is no river card that can come that will beat the eight high straight. The only exception is if the A4 happens to be suited and there is a flush possibility.

The only other possibility is that an eight comes on the river. This would create a split pot. Both players would play their four and create an eight high straight.

The person with 48 wins. They have a higher straight. The ace means nothing as a kicker when you have a straight. You can only use the 5 best cards. Unless there was an 8 on the river, then it would be a split pot.

And technically..........the flop is only 3 cards.......

Bad question....

The FLOP is only three cards. You listed four.

Also, you usually can not determine who won until the FLOP, TURN and RIVER are done, with five cards showing, two still hidden in each hand. You only list six cards total.

But with what you do show, the 4,5,6,7,8, hand wins as it is a higher straight than the 3,4,5,6,7, in the other hand. The cards not included in the five do not count so the Ace is worthless.

your proof is in your question. In poker you can only play 5 cards, period. So one person has a 7 high straight, 3,4,5,6,7. The other has an 8 high straight, 4,5,6,7,8. So the 8 high wins. Because 8 is higher than 7. the Ace means absolutely nothing. As for proof, well I wont waste my time with such an easy mathmatical problem.

You haven't mentioned the suits of the cards, if the suits of the cards were all different then the 45678 straight would win it, but if someone was holding 5 cards of the same suit then they would win with the Flush.

the 45678 staight would win because it is a higher straight than the 34567.

Hope that solves your problem?
