You aren't "addicted". You are feeling a "compulsion". These are not the same, though the media and pop-psychologists use the terms interchangeably. An addiction is a physiological chemical reaction to a drug. Your folks are, no kiddin' addicted to Nicotine.
Most likely your compulsion comes from seeing mature role-models using cigarettes. You might also associate good times with them, like Holidays etc. You don't mention if your friends smoke, but I would not be surprised, given your situation if they do.
Will power and behavior modification are the best ways to overcome a compulsion. Look at the positives for not smoking:
1- You smell better, kissing someone who smokes is like kissing an exhaust pipe
2- Your clothes smell better
3- Your skin won't dry out
4- You're saving about $2000/yr by not smoking
5- You won't have health problems
Modifying behavior means staying away from places were there
s alot of smoke. If your family and friends still do it, kindly ask them not to at your place. At their place, go outside-they'll take the hint.

Funny you should ask. I just read in the newspaper the other day that there is a part of your brain in the frontal lobe that controls addictions. I don't remember the entire article, but it suggested that minor brain surgery can entirely eliminate the desire to smoke.

addiction actually is hereditary. there is some sort of "addiction gene" that can be passed down by your parents. if your parents were addicted to anything you are more likely than others to become addicted. the only way you can prevent this is to be extremely careful not to do any alcohol or drugs because chances are you will become addicted to them. you should also try and find an al-anon type group therapy for people who are related to addicts.

when you were young and influential, your subconcious saw everyone smoking. it said "everyone does it therefore it's expected." so now your brain is getting mixed signals from your subconcious and concious. one thought you were supposed to be smoking and the other knows you aren't supposed to.
