First put your hair into a ponytail. Then, use bobby pins (that match your hair color) to clip parts of the hair up into the messy bun... you should use about 5-6 bobby pins. Do this when the hair is wet, so it will hold it's shape... it's really easy and works great. I have curly hair a little above my shoulders and I wear my hair like this every day. :)

I know how hard it is i have about the same length of hair, i usually use two hair bands, the first one just put it in a pony tail and the second one kindof rat the hair and flip it up then put the second hair tie over it. This should give you a messy bun look

go for the pony tail flip instead. Put it in a pony tail, and when you are pulling the hair through the ponytail holder for the last time (for me its the 3rd pass) only pull the hair half-way through. Do this so the loose hair is coming out of the top of the rubberband instead of the bottom so that the hair "flips" up out of the pony tail and leavesa loop of hair on the bottom and the loose ends hanging down on the top. Its hard to describe, but its cute when you do it.

OR, you can go to the store abd buy a ponytail holder made of fake hair (sounds gross, but its not). Then you put your hair in a tight bun, pin it up like you normally would, then put the ponytail holder around it. Don't use the fake hair thing to actually tie up the bun, you'll ruin it. Use a normal rubberband or hair pins.

It looks really cool, you have a ring of hair "ends" fanning out around the bun. I was so upset when I lost my "fake hair" pony tail holder.

when i put my hair up i always part it anyway on the side, then i twist it on one side and pin it with a bobby pin, it just makes it look a little classier.. then i shake my hair grab it with both hands, scrunch and plop and bring it loosely together wherever i want it to be that day. then i use a loose hair tie to loosely put my hair up. if theirs bumps in my hair i dont worry about it cuz i just flatten them out with a comb and pin it down with a bobby pin-then guess what ? more bobby pins... i take them and pin them randomly to get the bun to stay while still having the hair fall loosely. i've found that if you use a tight hairtie instead of pinning it then it just looks restricted...i like the way using pins look. i use them all the time..sometimes even instead of using a hairtie at all. and it looks really good. it adds a lot of body and its easy to redo a certain spot instead of taking the WHOLE thing out and redoing it..

hope that helps! have fun... try some pins though cuz those are fun to use. scrunch and then just twist and pin. mess it up and pin again.

Why dont you are trying scrunching it. Get a hand full of mossue and turn your head down and scrunch you hair inclusive of your palms, it additionally makes your hair look alot fuller too! or you ought to curl all your hair, then pull your facets lower back in a ponytail, twist that then positioned it in a clippy sturdy success

yeah, i do this all the time. just twist it up. then roll it into a bun in the middle of the back of ur head. then take a hairband and put it over it, and keep looping it up until it is tight. sometimes to have to do it over and over again to makesure it looks stylishly messy.

Puts some mess (mayo, honey, mustard and cap crap do nicely) in it and ball it up. Then hold in place with bobby pins and lots of hair spray.

when i try to do it for work -- i can never get it right.
