Get your dog a toy called a Kong Toy. You can find them in most pet stores. Get one that is the suitable size for your dog. Put peanut butter in it and throw it in the freezer the night before you are to leave. Before you leave the house, give him the kong toy to chew and work on when you are gone. Not only does this keep him busy for a good while, but rewards him when you leave the house each day, which in turn, helps ease separation anxiety.
Also, enroll you and your dog into obedience classes. Puppy kindergarten is a wonderful way to help owners and puppies learn about proper behaviors which help owners teach their puppies properly. It also helps create a socialized dog, which is really a big part in having your pup grow into a well behaved adult dog.
Best to you and your dog.

Five hours is a long stretch for a dog to be alone. Can someone come over to take him out for a walk? Do you have a doggy daycare facility available? Kongs are great toys and can keep him busy for a while.

Many younger dogs love having something that smells like their owner, it helps them to feel not so alone...I gave my dog an old blanket I was planning on giving away, some toys, and recently a new puppy to play with! It's helped her alot!

Toys are great for adult and young dogs. They make many different ones that might entertain your dog. Also try leaving the tv or radio on for your dog to keep him company.

Oh,um if your friend has a dog, tell her to bring it over.Get some treats for it or some toys some it can chew it out. There are some bones you can buy at Petco. Some are stretchy and chewy.OR...get a squeak toy and some other furry things. If your dog needs to be more quiet, you can hire a doggie sitter.

How do you know the dog barks if you're not there?
Maybe the dog is trying to tell you that he needs more attention or has a need that hasn't been filled.
Remember, they're only way of communication is through their bark-

Try doing activities with him when you are home that tire him out. Like going for walks, playing fetch etc. Train him to do tricks like sit, stay, down, off, shake, etc. When you are gone, give him lots of toys that make him think, like kongs, buster cubes, etc. Give him chews to chew on, etc. If he is destroying things, crate him or confine him to one area of the home.
Take your dog to behavior classes where they can address these issues now and get him on the right path.
